Constitution and political system
After the 1992 constitution, Togo is a unified state and
democratic republic. The supreme executive authority is
appended to the president, who is the country's real leader
and elected in the general election for five years. He
appoints the Prime Minister, who must have the support of
the majority in the National Assembly, and the other
government. Legislative authority has been added to the
National Assembly. It is elected in the general election for
five years and has 81 members. Despite formal
democratization, Togo is an authoritarian regime in which
President Gnassingbé Eyadéma sat in power from 1967 until he
died in 2005 and was succeeded by his son Faure Gnassingbé.
Administratively, the country of Togo is divided into five

The judiciary comprises a constitutional court, two
appellate courts and a number of first instance courts. In
addition, there is a labor court, a children's court, a
security court and a administrative court. The judges are

The weapon shows a green shield coated with a white, oval
dial; on the dial a yellow heart shield with the letters RT
(for République Togolaise). Above the heart shield,
which has two red lions with arrow and bow as shield
holders, two national flags are seen under a text ribbon
with the motto Union, paix, solidarity, 'Unity,
peace, solidarity'. The weapon was assumed in 1962.

Togo has military service after selection, with military
service for two years. Togo has defense cooperation with
France. The total force numbers for Togo's armed forces are
8550 active personnel (2018, IISS). In addition, 750
semi-military personnel come in a gendarmerie.
The army has a strength of about 8100 active personnel.
Materials include two tanks (T-54 and/or T-55), nine
Scorpion light tanks, 86 light trucks, 20 storm tanks, 34
armored vehicles, and six self-propelled artillery. In

Materials include 10 training aircraft (which can also be
used as attack aircraft/light attack aircraft), five
transport aircraft, and four helicopters.
The Navy has a force of about 200 active personnel,

In 2018 Togo participated in the UN operation in Mali (MINUSMA)
with infantry battalion and one field hospital (937

in UN operations in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA),
in Liberia (UNMIL), in Sudan (UNAMID), in South Sudan (UNMISS),
and in Western Sahara (MINURSO)).
