History of Albertville, Alabama
Albertville, Alabama is a city located in Marshall County and is the county seat. The city was founded in the late 19th century and has been a center of commerce and industry since then. It is located at the foot of Sand Mountain, which is part of the Appalachian Mountains.
The area around Albertville was first inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Cherokee and Creek Indians. In 1818, the land was ceded to the United States by treaty with the Creek Indians. Afterward, settlers from North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia began to move into the area. One of these settlers was John Albert who purchased land in 1844 and established a small farming community which he named “Albert’s Settlement” after himself.
In 1891, Albertville incorporated as a town but did not become an official city until 1914 when it had grown enough to be granted that status. At this time, it had a population of around 400 people. During this period, Albertville became an important trade center for cotton farmers in the area who shipped their goods out on railroads built by local businessman William J. Blackwell.
During World War II, Albertville served as an important base for military operations in North Africa due to its close proximity to Huntsville Army Air Field (now Redstone Arsenal). Afterward it continued to grow as a commercial hub with many businesses setting up shop in town including garment factories and food processing plants that provided jobs for many people in town and surrounding areas.
