OPERATING STRUCTURES AND EARNINGS
Establishments the size of Estancia San Carlos are common in this region of Argentina. The operating area is 12,000 hectares and is owned by Indunor SA, a joint stock company based in Buenos Aires, which also owns the neighboring tannin factory in La Escondida.
The entire area in the vicinity of Estancia San Carlos is also used by estancias, only a few of these establishments are significantly larger than San Carlos. The spatial organization of the business can be clearly seen on the map, for example the division of the site by fences into individual paddocks (potreros) and the cattle guard’s homes (puestos), which are spread over the entire area of the estancia.
The economic center (Casco) consists of the administration building, the garages for vehicles and equipment, the feed silos and facilities for care work on cattle, such as disinfection baths or vaccinations. A manager lives permanently on the Casco site as operations manager. However, the overall supervision of all operational management decisions is incumbent on a company for estancia management in Buenos Aires. These structures of organization and management are common for most Argentine estancias, especially in the pampas and in the Gran Chaco.
The aim of the company is the production of beef cattle, previously also of cross bracho hardwood for tannin production. Some of the young animals required come from our own rearing, the others come from specialized breeding companies. Parts of the operating area are artificial pastures or are used for the cultivation of fodder millet, but the majority is covered by near-natural grassland and forest.
In addition to the administrative staff and cattle rangers, a few other families of workers live and work at the Estancia San Carlos. A school and a hospital are located in the nearby town of La Escondida.
The estancia’s machinery includes tractors with equipment for cultivating fields and building roads, trucks for transporting cattle and small trucks. The fields are mostly ordered by external contractors. For more information about the continent of South America, please check businesscarriers.com.
