According to physicscat, in 2013, Cuba was a country of over 11 million people located in the Caribbean. Its capital city, Havana, was a vibrant and bustling metropolis. The Cuban economy was largely based on the export of sugar and tobacco, as well as foreign tourism. The Cuban government had a socialist political system, and its leaders were Fidel Castro and his brother Raul Castro. The Cuban people had access to free healthcare and education services provided by the government. This meant that Cubans had a higher level of literacy than most other Latin American countries. Despite this, poverty was still widespread due to economic mismanagement and US sanctions on the country. There were also restrictions on freedom of speech and press imposed by the government. In 2013, there were some signs of reform in Cuba with the relaxation of certain travel restrictions for citizens and increased investment from foreign companies in certain sectors. However, for many Cubans these reforms did not go far enough to improve their daily lives or bring about real change in their country. Cuba is an island nation located in the Caribbean, just south of Florida and east of Mexico. It is home to a population of around 11 million people with Spanish being the official language. The economy of Cuba has traditionally been based on agriculture, tourism and exports such as sugar, coffee and tobacco. In recent years it has been diversifying into other industries such as services, manufacturing and telecommunications. In 2014, the GDP per capita was estimated to be $7,400 USD which was lower than many other countries in the region such as Jamaica or Dominican Republic. In terms of culture, Cuba has many historical sites that are popular with tourists such as Old Havana and El Morro Fortress. There are also several national parks where visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking, snorkeling and wildlife watching. Popular sports include baseball, basketball and volleyball while traditional folk music and dance are still popular forms of entertainment in Cuba today. The country also has a rich literary tradition with authors such as Alejo Carpentier winning international awards for their work. Check areacodesexplorer for Cuba History.
