According to physicscat, Sierra Leone is a small country located on the west coast of Africa, with a population of around 6 million people in 2013. The capital, Freetown, was home to around 1 million people and served as the economic and political hub of the nation. The official languages were English, Krio and Mende and the currency was the Leone. The government of Sierra Leone in 2013 was a unitary presidential republic with an elected president as head of state and government. There were multi-party elections held every five years for both the president and members of Parliament. The economy of Sierra Leone in 2013 was based mainly on agriculture, forestry, fishing and mining. It had one of the lowest GDP per capita rates in Africa at that time due to decades of civil war which had caused significant disruption to economic growth. Poverty levels were high among most citizens though some progress had been made since the end of the civil war in 2002. In terms of political reform, Sierra Leone had made considerable progress since 2013 with regard to human rights issues such as freedom from torture, freedom from arbitrary arrest and detention as well as improvements in access to education and healthcare services for its citizens. However, corruption remained a major issue throughout its political system while violent crimes such as rape and murder were still prevalent across much of its territory. Overall, while there were still some issues that needed to be addressed before Sierra Leone could become a truly prosperous nation, it was clear that significant progress had been made since 2013 which provided hope for further economic growth and development going forward. In 2014, Sierra Leone was a West African nation located on the Atlantic coast and bordered by Guinea and Liberia. It was composed of an area of 71,740 square kilometers and had a population of just over 6 million people. The official language of Sierra Leone was English, with Krio and other local languages also spoken. Politically, the country was a presidential republic system with President Ernest Bai Koroma as its democratically elected leader since 2007. Sierra Leone had a fragile economy in 2014 with a GDP growth rate of 2.5% and an inflation rate of 17%. Its main industries at the time included agriculture, mining, manufacturing as well as services such as trade, finance and tourism. Despite having significant natural resources such as diamonds, gold and iron ore, the country suffered from high levels of corruption which hindered its economic development in many sectors. In terms of education levels in 2014, Sierra Leone had achieved universal primary enrollment rates but still lagged behind when it came to secondary enrollment rates which stood at just 28%. Furthermore, literacy rates were generally low with only 53% of adults being able to read and write fluently. This low level of educational attainment was mainly attributed to the country’s lack of investment in public education due to poverty levels which made it difficult for many children to attend school regularly or at all. Despite this however, there were signs that gender equality within the culture was slowly improving due to increased access to education for both boys and girls alike.
