According to physicscat, South Africa is a country located in the southernmost tip of the African continent, bordered by Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Swaziland. It is a multi-ethnic nation with a population of over 51 million people, including African, European, Indian and Coloured communities. The official language is English but there are 11 other languages recognized in the constitution. The currency is the South African Rand. In 2013 South Africa was one of the most developed countries in Africa with a GDP per capita of $10,000 USD. It had one of the largest economies on the continent with an estimated GDP of $368 billion USD. The economy relied heavily on mining and manufacturing as well as services such as banking and tourism. However, inequality levels were still high with approximately 63% of South Africans living below the poverty line in 2013. Unemployment also remained high at around 25%. In 2013 South Africa was still dealing with many social issues that had been inherited from Apartheid such as poverty and inequality among racial groups. Additionally, there were ongoing tensions between labor unions and employers which led to frequent strikes throughout that year. Despite these challenges South Africa continued to make progress towards peace and stability through its Truth & Reconciliation Commission which aimed to promote racial reconciliation by addressing past injustices. In 2014, South Africa was a country located in the southernmost part of the African continent and bordered by Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Swaziland. It had an area of 1.2 million square kilometers and a population of around 54 million people. The official languages of South Africa were English and Afrikaans with several other indigenous languages spoken widely by many people. Politically, South Africa was a parliamentary republic with President Jacob Zuma as its democratically elected leader since 2009. South Africa had a relatively strong economy in 2014 with a GDP growth rate of 1.9% and an inflation rate of 6%. Its main industries at the time included mining and manufacturing, services such as finance and tourism as well as agriculture which made up around 10% of its total income. In addition to having strong economic fundamentals, South Africa also had very high human development indicators such as life expectancy (63 years), access to education (99%) and per capita income ($11,200) which were all among some of the highest in the world. In terms of education levels in 2014, South Africa had achieved very high enrollment rates for both primary and secondary schools with literacy rates standing at 94%. This high level of educational attainment was mainly attributed to the country’s commitment to public education which ensured that all citizens had access to quality schooling regardless their socio-economic status or gender. Furthermore, this commitment to education also extended into tertiary institutions which saw many students from outside the country choosing South Africa as their study destination due to its relatively low tuition fees and high quality standards when compared to other developed countries.
