Furthermore, visitors could travel further north to Laos where they could enjoy activities such as kayaking or exploring caves on one of Southeast Asia’s most beautiful rivers. Overall, Thailand in 2013 provided travelers with plenty to experience and explore. With its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage there were plenty opportunities for visitors to experience both sides without having to compromise on either one. In 2014, Thailand was a Southeast Asian nation with a population of around 68 million people. It was bordered by Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia. The official language was Thai but English was widely spoken in the cities. Thailand’s economy relied heavily on export-oriented manufacturing, tourism and agriculture. Its currency was the Thai Baht. Thailand’s terrain ranged from mountains to coastal areas to tropical forests and islands. Its highest point was Doi Inthanon at 8,415 feet above sea level. The wildlife in Thailand included tigers, elephants, rhinoceroses and monkeys among many other species of animals as it had some of the best national parks in Asia such as Khao Yai National Park and Thap Lan National Park. The government of Thailand was a unitary constitutional monarchy led by King Bhumibol Adulyadej who had been in power since 1946 when he became the ninth monarch since 1782 when the Chakri dynasty began its rule over Thailand. The country also has a unicameral parliamentary system with 500 members elected for four-year terms from constituencies across the country with an additional 150 appointed by the Prime Minister through special interests such as women or people with disabilities or youth representatives.
