With a population of over 75 million people, Turkey was home to many different ethnic and religious groups who spoke a variety of languages including Turkish, Kurdish and Arabic. From its grand mosques such as the Hagia Sophia or Blue Mosque to its lively markets which sold everything from hand-crafted carpets to Turkish delights, Istanbul was a cultural melting pot where travelers could experience both eastern and western cultures without having to compromise on either one. Furthermore, travelers could enjoy some of the city’s unique attractions such as the Grand Bazaar or take a boat ride down the Bosphorus which provided stunning views over the city. Outside Istanbul, Turkey offered plenty to see and do for visitors. From beach resorts along its Mediterranean coast where travelers could relax in the sun or take part in water sports such as scuba diving or sailing to Cappadocia which is an area known for its stunning rock formations and underground cities, Turkey had something for everyone. For those looking for something different there were plenty of unique attractions such as Ephesus which is an ancient Roman city or Pamukkale which is famous for its white travertine terraces. Furthermore, travelers could venture further out to Mount Ararat where they could explore one of biblical history’s most iconic mountains or take a tour through traditional villages in rural Anatolia where they could observe local customs that have been practiced for centuries. Overall, Turkey in 2013 provided travelers with plenty to experience and explore. With its diverse culture and stunning natural beauty there were plenty opportunities for visitors to experience both sides without having to compromise on either one. Turkey is a Eurasian country located in the Anatolian peninsula of Western Asia, with a population of approximately 77.7 million people in 2014. It was bordered by eight countries including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Iran, Iraq and Syria. The official language was Turkish but English and German were also widely spoken. The currency was Turkish lira (TRY). The terrain of Turkey ranged from mountains in the east to coastal plains along the Mediterranean Sea and Aegean Sea to the west with its highest point being Mount Ararat at 5137 meters above sea level. It had a variety of wildlife including wolves, lynxes, wild boars and jackals among others as well as many species of birds such as flamingos, eagles and owls. The government of Turkey was a unitary parliamentary constitutional republic led by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan since 2003 after he was elected by popular vote. The country also had a multi-party system with legislative power vested in both the government and Parliament with unicameral parliamentary system composed of 550 members elected for four-year terms from constituencies across Turkey with an additional 8 seats appointed by the President through special interests such as women or people with disabilities or youth representatives.
