The 10 largest countries in the world
In terms of area, the ten largest countries in the world are as follows:
- Russian Federation
With 17,098,240 square kilometers, Russia is number one, but large parts of Eastern Russia are almost unpopulated tundra and taiga. Most of the population lives in the European part of the Russian Federation.
Canada is the second largest country in the world in terms of area, in front of its southern and northwestern neighbor USA, and has an area of 9,984,670 square kilometers. The population is concentrated in metropolitan areas in the south of the country, the north is almost unpopulated. The so-called “First Nations”, Indian tribes and Inuit (Eskimos) mainly settle here.
- United States of America
The area of the USA is 9,629,090 square kilometers. The USA range from tropical and subtropical climates in Florida, Southern California and Hawaii to polar climates in Alaska. The population is over 300 million.
The country with the largest population of around 1.4 billion people is China. The multi-ethnic state with over 60 population groups has an area of 9,598,060 square kilometers. From subtropical climates in the south to temperate climates in the northeast, from desert climates in the northwest to hostile high mountains in Tibet, China has extremely different climates.
The fifth largest country in the world is Brazil with an area of 8,514,880 square kilometers and a population of around 140 million. Brazil owns metropolises like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo as well as the tropical rainforest and the second longest river in the world, the Amazon.
The smallest continent is also the sixth largest country in the world. The area of Australia is 7,741,220 square kilometers, it has about 24 million inhabitants. These settle almost exclusively on the coasts, because the interior of Australia consists almost entirely of dry steppe and inhospitable desert. However, the famous Ayers Rock and the Aboriginal People can also be found here, some of whose tribes still live today as in the Stone Age.
The largest democracy in the world has a population of over a billion people (1.210 billion) spread over an area of 3,287,260 square kilometers. India has the second largest population in the world after China and is the seventh largest country by area. India is still an agricultural state dependent on the monsoon, but it is also a nuclear power and space nation.
Argentina has an area of 2,780,400 square kilometers. The country ranges from Tierra del Fuego in the very south, where it’s getting very cold, to the Andes in the west, where the highest mountains in South America and the entire American continent are. Argentina borders Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay in the north. Here you will find the endless pampas in which Argentina’s cattle grow. The country is the largest beef exporter in the world, but also an emerging wine-growing nation in the Mendoza region.
With its 2,724,900 square kilometers, the former Soviet Republic is the ninth largest country in the world. It lies between Russia in the north, China in the east and various “-stans” in the south, for example Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Kazakhstan is a multinational state where Kazakhs, Uighurs, Turkmens and many other peoples live together. It is also strategically important because of its wealth of resources and its relative proximity to unstable regions like Afghanistan.
The tenth largest country in the world is in the neighborhood of Europe on the other side of the Mediterranean in North Africa. Algeria is 2,381,740 square kilometers. The majority of the population lives on the coast, the interior is desert.
To classify the national areas: Germany is 357,030 square kilometers in size and a good 80 million Germans live on this area, all of Europe with its over 50 countries – including the European part of Russia – is a good 10 million square kilometers in size and thus hardly larger than Canada, the USA or China.
